Crazy Quilted Fancy PurseCrazy Quilt Purse Project

If you can make a crazy quilted block, you can make this purse. This is a great project for beginners to experienced quilters. The purse can go serious, whimsical, casual, or fancy, however you like it. Use your favorite style of crazy patching, and decorate it with embroidery stitches, silk ribbon embroidery, and any and all trims that speak your muse. This purse is 6-1/2" square, but you can make yours any size you like. Choose a fun lining fabric; it will show at the edges.

Tools Needed:

Materials Needed:

1. Cut 2 pieces of muslin for foundations, each 7" square.

2. Crazy patch the foundations using the method of your choice.

3. Embroider and embellish as you wish, keeping any "hard" trims about 1" away from the edges.

4. Cut 2 pieces each of batting and lining, 7" square.

5. Layer: place one patched piece and one lining right sides together, and lay the batting on top. Pin. Sew around using a 1/4" seam allowance and leaving an opening to turn. Turn, press, and handstitch the opening closed. Repeat for the remaining pieces.

6. Choose which way is up for each block, and topstitch along the upper edge.

7. Place the 2 blocks with lining sides together and hand- or machine-sew 1/4" in from the side and bottom edges.

8. Sew a 1" metal ring to each side of the top. Sew on the fancy closure button. Make an 8" long fabric loop or use cording for the closure, knot the ends and stitch the knots to the back of the purse so the loop fits over the button. Make a purse handle out of fabric or cording the length of your choice (the handle shown here is 21" long), and sew or tie it onto the metal loops.
