Gil & Marsha Visit to California 2010

We chose California as a vacation spot this year, partly to explore Gil's old haunts, and to surprise Gil's sister at her birthday party.
We stayed for a week at Avila Beach, about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Spent a day driving through Big Sur in the fog- very beautiful! What a phenomenal drive on winding roads with mountains on one side and beautiful coastline on the other. Couldn't resist stopping at the Henry Miller Library (it's really a bookstore), a quaint little place.
The Hearst castle was nearby so we went there too. What a fabulous place! Located on the top of a mountain with a great view, and the landscaping, architecture, and Italian antiquities were fabulous.
We saw a eucalyptus tree full of Monarch butterflies, elephant seals on a beach, lots and lots of ranchland in rolling hills and mountains, and acres and acres of vineyards. Went to a wine tasting and tried some really wonderful wines.
Spent a couple of days in the Anaheim area, had a wonderful time at the brthday party, walked around Laguna Beach, drove out to the desert. It was a great time but we couldn't wait to get home- southern CA being a touch too settled for us.
